Technical Aspects and Components of MANPADS

The author analyzes to what extent the characteristics of each individual component can contribute to limiting the proliferation of MANPADS. He finds that: MANPADS are durable and can function over decades however the seeker and guiding components are the most sensitive element; infra-red homing MANPADS continue to need less training to be effective, tripod mounted systems are more cumbersome and difficult to transfer clandestinely; repair requires a high degree of technical knowledge.MANPADS architectures—An overview
